Deoband View on Waseela (Tawassul)

FATWA NO 1 : Darul Ifta, Darul Uloom Deoband

(Fatwa: 103/103=M/1429)

It is lawful to supplicate Allah with the waseelah (intermediation) of the prophets and awliya, e.g.: O Allah! Fulfil my so and so need by the waseelah of the Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم)!

وفی الترمذی: عن عثمان حنیف أن رَجُلًا ضَرِيرَ الْبَصَرِ أتى النبي صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم فقال ادْعُ اللَّهَ أَنْ يُعَافِيَنِي قال إن شِئْتَ دَعَوْتُ وَإِنْ شِئْتَ صَبَرْتَ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لك قال فَادْعُهْ قال فَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَتَوَضَّأَ فَيُحْسِنَ وُضُوءَهُ وَيَدْعُوَ بهذا الدُّعَاءِ اللهم إني أَسْأَلُكَ وَأَتَوَجَّهُ إِلَيْكَ بِنَبِيِّكَ مُحَمَّدٍ نَبِيِّ الرَّحْمَةِ إني تَوَجَّهْتُ بِكَ إلى رَبِّي في حَاجَتِي هذه لِتُقْضَى لِيَ اللهم فَشَفِّعْهُ فِيَّ

Fatwa no 3

It is advisable to visit the graveyard as much as possible as this reminds one of death and inspires one to prepare for ones final abode in the hereafter. When visiting any grave, it is advisable to make Dua (supplication) for the deceased. When making Dua, one should ask directly from Allah Taa’la and not from the deceased. However one could ask Allah Ta’la through the Waseela (intermediary) of the deceased.

Fatwa 4 Mufti Ibrahim Desai

Almighty Allah Taala instructs us, “Oh you who believe, seek waseela towards Him”.

In various ahadith, Rasulullah (SAW) also advised us on waseela.

As believers, our source of guidance is the Quran and Ahadith, irrespective of any rational behind the order. Nevertheless, even in a working environment, there is much consideration of waseela and adopting means for ones success. If one expresses loyalty to his immediate boss and gets promotion due to that, it is quite in order. The company respects the boss and due to his position in the company, it considers the loyalty of people to him. Pious people have closeness to Allah. Allah considers their closeness to Him and fulfills the wishes of His servants expressing their loyalty to such pious people as they are aware of the link of such pious people to Allah. In effect the waseela through pious people is also an expression of the closeness to Allah Ta’ala.

Fifth: one supplicates to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) taking as a means his relationship with a pious servant who it is hoped is one brought close to Allah (Most High), and this is what some ‘ulama described as du’a to Allah through the blessing of a pious servant. This includes the living and the dead.

Mufti Taqi Usmani the famous deobandi authority, he explains how one should ask for Prophet’s intercession or ask prophet directly at his blessed grave:

After this Salam you should pray to Allah through the mediation of the Holy Prophet (Peace be upon him). Then you should ask the Holy Prophet for his intercession and say: “O Messanger of Allah ! I ask you for your intercession and I request your mediation towards Allah for that I die as Muslim, on your faith and on your tradition.”
